PayPal and Paytm logos
Global payments provider PayPal has accused Indian digital wallet and payments provider Paytm of copying its logo. In a complaint addressed to the Registrar of Trademarks on 18 November, PayPal declared its intention to oppose the registration of Paytm’s logo, which it claims was copied from its own logo.
Among the several claims, PayPal has alleged that the Paytm logo copies its ‘two-tone’ colour scheme as well as the fact that both names begin with ‘Pay’. Paytm had first advertised its logo on 18 July. The complaint was filed on the last day of the statutory four-month period before the logo could get trademarked.
Paytm has been one of the largest beneficiaries of the demonetisation plan by the government, reporting more than seven million transactions per day, greater than the average number of credit and debit card transactions per day.
