The Indian Railways has initiated measures to protect its staff by manning level crossings after the horrific incident at Sonipat where miscreants chopped off the hands of a railway employee before fleeing. The Delhi division of the Northern Railways has decided to install CCTV cameras at all manned level crossings falling under the division’s jurisdiction.

It has been reported that the railway authorities have already identified 24 ‘vulnerable’ points across their network, where, in addition to CCTV’s, security forces would also be deployed to provide additional security to the rail staff. As the provision of law and order is a state subject, the railway officials are said to have written to the Haryana police and chief secretary with a view of providing sufficient security to rail staff that are manning level crossings.

Railway officials also said that the injured official’s arms have been reattached and that the cost of the surgery and treatment have all been borne by the railways. The injured rail official is said to be making a quick recovery from the aftermath of the ghastly attack.
