A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, on vacation in his native Pudukkotai, has been arrested in the latest case of statue vandalism in Tamil Nadu (TN), TN based DTNext has reported.
A statue belonging to EV Ramasamy, popularly known as Periyar in TN, was found beheaded yesterday (20 March) in Pudukkotai following which DMK cadre in the town had staged a protest. Police personnel were also deployed in the town to avoid any untoward incidents.
However, now S Senthil, head constable with 150 Battalion of the CRPF has been arrested and has confessed before the courts. Senthil pleaded guilty of the crime and said that he was inebriated when he climbed atop the statue and smashed its head.
He has been sent to judicial custody for 15 days. Senthil was identified from a CCTV footage of the incident.
The damaged statue has also been restored.
