Plying To Mumbai From Nashik To Be A ‘Local’ Affair? Central Railways Plans EMU Train

The Central Railway (CR), pending success of trials in deep ghat section, is planning to launch an Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) train for passengers to ply between Mumbai and Nashik, Times of India has reported.
The train, with automatic door closure system, will carry passengers between Kalyan and Nashik road if its trials are successful.
The EMU services will operate to Nashik, once several steps are taken to prevent accidents in the ghat section, said the Research Standards and Designs Organisation (RDSO).
“RDSO has said EMU trains should run only with automatic door closure system with proper ventilation. It also said EMUs should have more braking power than the ones used in the suburban section at present,” a Central Railway official was quoted in the report as saying.
Further, Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory (ICF) has been asked by the Central Railway for a distinctive EMU rake with enough braking power, ensuring the train will remain steady while brakes are applied on inclined regions.
However, another official informed that the trials will begin only after three months when the rake is expected to arrive.
Despite RDSO’s claims of train having adequate power, another engine will be added in the rear for the long distance trains to provide additional power to ply the steep ghat sections.
