Tamil Nadu plans to do away with attendance registers in school by introducing an artificial-intelligence based facial recognition system for student identification, India Today has reported.

The state, on Monday (10 December), said the attendance system through face reading will begin on a pilot basis at a government school for girls, after which the system will be expanded to schools in rest of the state.

This will be the first time in India, that such an attendance system will be used for students, School Education Minister K A Sengottaiyan said while adding the trend is already established in countries like the USA, Japan.`

"The newly launched Artificial Intelligence-enabled attendance system through face reading is being implemented for the first time in India," Sengottaiyan said. The facial recognition-based attendance will work through a mobile app, which will store photos and other related data of students in it, officials said.

The teachers need to click a photo of students in a group, which will then recognise students and store the information on a computer server.
