The Punjab Assembly today (23 June) approved a special amendment of the Punjab Excise Act, 1914, to exempt hotels, restaurants and clubs from the Supreme Court order banning the sale of liquor within 500m of a highway.

In December 2016, the Supreme Court of India had passed an order that prohibited the sale of liquor within 500m of national and state highways, a move that did not go down well with many states.

Earlier in April this year, the Punjab government had denotified 12 stretches of highways to provide some respite from the apex court’s order to hotel owners across the state.
