The Congress did not allow Republic TV reporters to enter the venue of its 30-minute-long press conference on Tuesday (12 December) addressed by newly crowned President Rahul Gandhi, the channel has said.

This development comes soon after Congress leader and former Union minister Mani Shankar Aiyar physically assaulted Republic TV’s reporter while addressing the media on his ‘neech aadmi' remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This was not the first time Republic TV was not allowed to cover a Congress press conference. Republic TV reporters were not allowed to cover Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's press briefing at the Congress headquarters in August.

In a decision that came as a blow to Congress, the Delhi High Court had earlier this month refused to restrain journalist Arnab Goswami and Republic TV from airing news or debate on Shashi Tharoor's wife Sunanda Pushkar's death. The Court had, however, asked the channel to respect the Shashi Tharoor's "right to silence".

The court had on 29 May said the journalist and his news channel could put out stories stating the facts related to the investigation of Pushkar's death but could not call the Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram "a criminal".
