Congress president Rahul Gandhi failed to attend the first day of first session of the 17th Parliament, reports Times Now.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT Cell head Amit Malviya took a jibe on Gandhi on Twitter saying, “As the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha begins, Rahul Gandhi is nowhere to be seen. Such respect for India’s democracy!”

Congress president chose to skip the parliamentary session’s first day in favour of a meeting with Haryana Congress leader Kuldeep Bishnoi and sister Priyanka at his Delhi residence.

For the 16th Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi maintained a poor show with only 52 per cent attendance as compared to national average of 80 per cent. Gandhi’s performance as a member of parliament, gauged by debates, number of questions asked etc also remained sub-par when compared to the national average.

Gandhi is also facing charges of being a British citizen based on a complaint by BJP Rajya Sabha and former Union Minister Dr Subramanian Swamy. Based on the complaint, the Home ministry had sent a notice to Rahul Gandhi stating that a British company had named him a British citizen in its records. Rahul Gandhi was one of the directors and secretary of the said company, the letter mentioned.
