Demolished houses of Pak Hindus in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan
The Hindu refugees from Pakistan residing in temporary settlements (Kachchi basti) in Amarsagar gram panchayat area, 4 km from Jaisalmer district headquarters, had their shelters demolished by district administration on Tuesday (16 May).
The Pakistani Hindu migrants who are settled in Jaisalmer claim the Rajasthan government ordered their eviction from government land.
After facing backlash for the eviction, Minister Pratap Khachariyawas on Thursday (18 May) said that the officials "trying to malign the state government" will be taken to task.
Calling the action a "conspiracy" to defame the government, Khachariyawas said, "What the officials did is wrong. They will have to answer. We will take action against them. Pakistani Hindu migrants are living in Jaisalmer on a vacant plot of land."
Under Rajasthan law, it is illegal to evict someone without rehabilitating them, the Minister said, issuing a warning that the officials who conspired against the government will face consequences.
Jaisalmer District Magistrate Tina Dabi said the evicted Pakistani Hindu migrants will be relocated to shelter homes until they are allotted land.
"The place they were residing had already been allotted to others. We had a talk with them today. They will be moved to shelter houses till they get a proper allotment of land," said Dabi.
On Wednesday (17 May), she met with migrant protesters and promised them relocation to a new place.
"The land on which the encroachment was removed yesterday was either allotted by UIT (Urban Improvement Trust) earlier or is in the water catchment area. That's why we have explained to those people that if you sit at this place, then you will face problems in future also," Dabi said.
According to the District Magistrate, the land will be allotted to those who have citizenship; those who don't have citizenship will be identified and settled after getting theirs done and then allotted land.
