The Delhi government has finally approved its long-pending proposal for delivering ration in sealed packets at the doorsteps to Public Distribution System (PDS) beneficiaries under the Targeted Public Distribution System, Food Security Act 2013.

The proposal of the Department of Food, Supply and Consumer Affairs for providing doorstep delivery of wheat, rice and sugar for eligible beneficiaries was passed at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday and will be now be sent to the Lt Governor Anil Baijal for the final nod.

While announcing the scheme, Delhi's deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said, "Attempts were made to put roadblocks in the passage of the scheme but then it was approved by the Cabinet today. It will now be sent to the L-G for his consent. I will also request the L-G to consider it, keeping in mind the poor residents of Delhi and pass it.  Delhi government is committed to ensuring that eligible beneficiaries receive their due ration in a transparent manner with maximum ease."

The scheme intends to "save time and resources of ration beneficiaries in Delhi". It also seeks to end the rampant theft of ration, poor quality of supplies, growth of ration mafia and shops remaining closed. The proposal would allow a higher level of transparency in the delivery system through inbuilt online monitoring, which would weed out corruption.
