The Jammu and Kashmir administration would take up the matter of granting one-time compensation to the 5,300 displaced families from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) with the central government, reports Economic Times.

According to the report, these displaced families from PoJK were left out in the rehabilitation package that was announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015.

The State Administrative Council, in a meeting held under the chairmanship of state Governor Satya Pal Malik on Wednesday (31 July), has decided to submit a proposal to the Centre in this regard, a spokesperson said.

PM Modi had announced a reconstruction plan for the state in November 2015. The plan included a rehabilitation package for one-time settlement of 36,384 displaced persons’ (DPs) families of PoJK-1947 and Chhamb DPs.

In the aftermath of partition of the country in 1947, thousands of families from Pakistan occupied areas of Jammu and Kashmir migrated to Jammu and Kashmir. Subsequently, during Indo-Pak Wars of 1965 and 1971, a large number of families were displaced from Chhamb Niabat area of Jammu and Kashmir.

As per the report, the package announced by PM Modi provided for an amount of Rs 2,000 crore at Rs 5.5 lakh per family. However, the package, according to the spokesperson, did not cover the 5,300 DP families of PoJK-1947. They were initially registered outside J&K but later on settled inside the state.
