Following the lead of Sun Direct, Tata Sky has announced that subscribers won’t be charged network fees over and above the basic price for select channels, reports Telecom Talk.

As per the new regulations rolled out by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), cable subscribers are now charged under two heads - network charges and content chargers. Thus if a subscriber wishes to add a new pay-for-view channel, he is required to pay both of them.

Sun Direct earlier rolled out a scheme under which it will only levy content charges from customers and waive off network charges for all pay channels above the basic pack of Rs 154.

But Tata Sky has waived off network charges on select pay channels. Thus a subscriber will still be required to pay network charges on two-thirds of the paid channels.

Tata Sky Blinks First

On 25 January, Tata Sky, which is engaged in a legal battle with TRAI, issued a statement that it will comply with the regulator’s new pricing regime. DTH operators like Tata Sky, Sun Direct TV and Airtel TV had together filed a petition in the Delhi High Court against the TRAI order.

To promote transparency and provide greater choice to consumers, TRAI had overhauled the regulatory framework for cable operators and brought in a new regime that allowed customers to just pay for channels which they watch.
