In welcome news for retired personnel of Indian Army, Indian Railways has issued an order to allow recruitment of former army men through the Sainik Kalayan Board, PTI has reported.

General managers have been empowered by the Indian Railways to recruit the men as per need according to a recruitment order modification. The earlier order allowed the managers to recruit personnel from government security agencies like home guards, Maharashtra Industrial Security Force in core areas of railway security like securing its premises.

According to data, 76,563 C and D-level RPF and RPSF (railway protection special force) personnel are currently working with the Railways which is 15 per cent less than the sanctioned strength. Managers have been given the power to increase the strength till the vacancies are met.

The Sainik Kalyan Board is a department under the Ministry of Defence which advises on the policies for resettlement and looks to the welfare of ex-servicemen and widows. About 60,000 personnel are released from active duty every year in India and are between the ages of 35-45, thus needing a second career.
