Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured genuine people in Assam that they shall never be excluded from the National Register of Citizens. On Friday (January 4), speaking at the Vijay Sankalp Samavesh rally in Assam’s Silchar, Modi told the gathering that no genuine citizen of the country will be excluded from the list or deported for that matter.
During the Assembly elections in Assam, implementation of NRC was one of the biggest poll promises of the BJP. It promised to protect the rights of the ethnic Assamese. The PM added that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill will soon be passed in Parliament. Many ethnic Assamese have discovered that their names are missing from the final draft of the NRC, leaving them worried.
Live Mint quoted PM Modi as saying, “I am aware of the problems and the difficulties faced by many during the NRC process, but I assure you that no injustice will be done to any genuine Indian citizen.”
This has angered the BJP’s ally in Assam, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), who have been strongly opposing the passing of the bill.
A high-level committee will soon be appointed to ensure that the rights of the ethnic Assamese are protected. About 40 lakh people have been excluded from the final draft of the NRC.
