Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
Vice-captain Rohit Sharma is likely to replace skipper Virat Kohli as the Indian captain in the limited-overs format following the World T20 that will conclude in November this year.
According to a report by the Times of India, Kohli has decided to share the leadership responsibilities with Sharma and focus more on his individual batting form that seems to be going through a lean patch in the last couple of years.
There have been lengthy discussions over this issue between the duo and the entire team management in the last few months.
Moreover, the idea seems to have emerged after Indian team’s historic victory in the Border-Gavaskar trophy in Australia under the leadership of stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane.
Reportedly, Kohli is of the view that his batting requires greater impetus and more time leading up to a series of World Cups until 2023.
The BCCI is also believed to be gradually working towards building up to this moment irrespective of the buzz that the announcement will undoubtedly create.
“Virat himself will make the announcement. He is of the view that he needs to concentrate on his batting and go back to becoming what he’s always been — the best batsman in the world,” sources from the cricket board were quoted by the TOI.
Rohit already has led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles since taking over the captaincy of the franchise in 2013. He also led India to the Asia Cup victory in 2018 as a stand-in skipper and has steadily become a mainstay across the all the three formats of the game.
