‘Safe’ On Social Media? 54 Per Cent Users Don’t Change Online Passwords, 56 Per Cent Share Mobile Numbers

According to a recent survey, 54 per cent of users had not changed their social media passwords in the last six months and 56 per cent had shared their mobile phone numbers freely online, reports Economic Times.
The survey, conducted by the online classified portal OLX, was released on Monday (4 February) on the occasion of Safer Internet Day (5 February). It collated responses from 26,000 Indians who were active on the internet.
It was also found that over 60 per cent of adult users did not monitor the content viewed by their kids online. Also, only 68 per cent of those surveyed had never shared their one-time password (OTP) of their bank account, social media accounts, laptop or phone with others.
“Safer Internet Day is a great time to reflect on our personal attitudes and behaviours, and make a concerted choice to take actions that ensure our own safety and that of our children. It is in our interest, therefore, to use it in a manner that continues to improve the quality of our lives while staying safe by implementing the same level of caution we exercise in the real world,” said Lavanya Chandan, general counsel of Olx India.
Similar Findings
Another survey of 2,500 US consumers conducted by electronics portal, PCMag in 2018, found that 35 per cent of people never changed their passwords voluntarily and they did so only if they were prompted. However, 27 per cent said they changed the passwords several times a year.
