‘Same Food For Everyone’: Delhi High Court Refuses To Allow Home Meals For Chidambaram In Tihar Jail

The Delhi High Court on Thursday (12 September) denied home-cooked food for former finance minister P Chidambaram who is currently under judicial custody in Tihar jail in INX Media corruption case, reports The New Indian Express.
Hearing the regular bail plea filed by him, Justice Suresh Kumar Kait said, “Same food is available for everyone.” Arguing on his behalf his lawyer and Congress leader Kapil Sibal had requested the court to allow home-cooked food to be served to Chidambaram.
Sibal also referred to senior Congress leader’s age in his requested that was turned down by the court. “My Lords, he is 74 years old,” said Sibbal commenting on Court’s refusal.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, however, responded the state cannot discriminate with prisoners this way. He said, “Even Chautala (Om Prakash Chautala) is old and is a political prisoner. As a state, we can't distinguish anyone.”
The court was hearing the arguments on a regular bail plea filed by Chidambaram for his alleged involvement in INX Media case. However, the court has sought CBI’s response on the plea and posted the matter to be heard on 23 September.
In the plea filed on Wednesday, Chidambaram had also alleged the case to be “political vendetta” and the CBI was “acting at the behest of the Centre”.
