Samsung To Enter Smart Home Market By Redeveloping Apartment In South Korea’s Busan Using IoT Tech

South Korean technology giant Samsung, in a bid to build smart homes by combining various Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and create an environment where an automation systems will control lighting, climate, entertainment systems, and appliances.
The project is the company’s first real-world test where-in it will be redeveloping an apartment in the South Korean city of Busan. Around 2,600 units will be available for sale and owners can order a smart-home retrofit starting June this year and move into them by August 2022.
These homes powered by Samsung’s software can show visitors what’s inside the refrigerator, control the living-room lightning, air-conditioning, and be added with an interface that recommends music and TV shows.
Samsung C&T Corp will oversee the smart-home project. C&T is part of Samsung’s business empire and built Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, and Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Twin Towers.
Samsung’s entry into smart home business comes as an add-on to its already existing product portfolio of internet-connected TVs, refrigerators and other appliances and gadgets.
Samsung will be vying for a share into the $77 billion global markets for internet-connected appliances and furniture. Samsung with its global leadership position can give a tough fight to Amazon and Google who are fighting it out with their AI based applications and interface in the smart-home space.
For now, Samsung envisions a smart bathroom mirror that can analyse a customer’s health, the bathtub that can fill with water at just the right temperature while home owners are on their way home, and lights that automatically adjust to wavelengths that help concentrate on a book or wind down as needed. The project might see some roadblock given the growing privacy concerns over technology.
It is estimated that the world will have around 300 million smart homes by 2022 as more customers are willing to pay to live in the future concept of a home.
