Under the NDA Government’s flagship electrification scheme, Saubhagya, eight states have achieved 100 per cent electrification, as reported by Hindustan Times (HT).

According to the latest data released by the Centre, all households and commercial establishments in Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Mizoram, Sikkim, Telangana and West Bengal, have access to electricity. Bihar has achieved 100 per cent electrification two months ahead of schedule.

These states join the list of other seven states - Punjab, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Goa - that have already achieved this milestone, taking the total to 15. Under the Saubhagya scheme, the government has added as many 21 million (2.1 crore) new electricity connections so far.

Commenting on the progress being made by other states with regards to electrification, Union Minister of State (independent charge) for Power and Renewable Energy, R K Singh, said: “Many more states such as Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh etc. are left with a small number of un-electrified households and are expected to achieve saturation any time.”

PM Modi launched the Saubhagya (Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana) scheme in 2017 to electrify all the remaining households in the country by March 2019. It builds upon the strength of the NDA government’s another scheme for the sector, Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY). It helped the government to achieve 100 per cent electrification of all villages in India in 2018.
