SC Advocates (Pic Via Twitter)
A group of Supreme Court advocates on Wednesday (8 January) sang the National Song Vande Mataram outside the apex court to show their support for the Citizenship Amendment Act, which fast-tracks citizenship for the persecuted religious minorities of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The move by SC advocates comes a day after other group of apex court’s lawyers including Prashant Bhushan, Kamini Jaiswal, read out the preamble of the Constitution to oppose the CAA and remind people of the Constitutional values, reports Times of India.
The Act was passed by the Parliament in December last year and received the Presidential assent on 12 December. The law meant for persecuted religious minorities of three neighbouring Islamic countries has met with protests across the country.
Violent anti-CAA protests rocked Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, where the police had to resort to baton-charge and lobbing of tear gas to disperse protesters indulging in rioting and arson.
In Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi government had dealt firmly with those found rioting and damaging the public property. The UP administration in a bid to recover the losses to public property has seized the assets of the rioters.
