In a positive development, the second consignment of Russian Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine doses has arrived in India, reports Livemint.

The first consignment of the two-dose COVID-19 vaccine which has been developed by Russia’s Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology arrived in India on 1 May. Thereafter, the batch had been sent to the Central Drugs Laboratory in Kasauli and was finally cleared for use on 13 May.

Just a day later, Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical major Dr Reddy’s Laboratories soft-launched the vaccine in India as a pilot project in Hyderabad. It also shared that the imported doses of the vaccine will be priced at Rs 995.4 inclusive of GST and that the costs may come down after local manufacturing begins.

Dr Reddy’s Laboratories is the marketing and distribution partner for Sputnik V in India, even though the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) has also tied up with six more pharmaceutical players in the country to produce the vaccine.

It should be noted that as per the information shared by Russia’s Ambassador to India N Kudashev, the vaccine is also effective against the newer strains of the coronavirus.
