The Shia Central Waqf Board yesterday (9 January) wrote a controversial letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging for madrasas to be shut down, claiming that the Islamic education imparted was encouraging students to join terrorist ranks.

The letter urged Modi to replace madrasas with schools affiliated with either the Council For The Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) or Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Chairman of the board Wasim Rizvi said that madrasas impart "misplaced and misconceived religious education".

All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) spokesman Khalilur Rehman Sajjad Nomani reacted by saying that questioning madrasas was akin to insulting them.

Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain clarified that neither the Centre nor the Uttar Pradesh government had any plans to stop them.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi called Rizvi a 'buffoon' and an opportunist for claiming that Madrasas bred terrorists. He claimed that Rizvi had sold his soul to the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS).
