The Shiv Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ has now trained its guns on the BJP-led central government over the recent JNU student protests over a hostel fee hike, slamming the purported ‘lathi charge’ which police resorted to in order to control the situation, reports Republic.

The article headlined ‘Suppression in the streets of Delhi’ has asserted that such sort of protests commonly take place outside parliament, and questioned the Centre over what steps it had taken to fulfill the demands of JNU students.

Referring to the protesters as ‘middle-class and poor students’, the publication accused the BJP of trying to clamp down on the protest because its student wing ABVP had not managed to control over the institution.

Relations between the two former alliance partners, the BJP and Shiv Sena, have cold in recent weeks after the latter decided to enter government formation talks in Maharashtra with its traditional ideological opponents, the Congress and NCP.

Note: This piece wrongly carried an image of Mr Nadeem Khan implying him to be a protestor on behalf of JNU when he was not. The image has now been replaced and the error is regretted.
