Personal details of 1.5 million patients, including Singaporean Prime Minister (PM) Lee Hsien Loong and several other ministers were stolen in what is being described as the worst cyberattack the nation has had to suffer, Straits Times has reported.
The attack targeted Singapore’s largest healthcare chain, SingHealth, which operates several medical facilities in the nations with a population just over 5.5 million.
The Singaporean PM acknowledged the beach in a Facebook post, confirming that the patient’s data including his own had been stolen by hackers.
Although no data has been tampered with reportedly, several personal details like names, addresses, race and date of birth were illegally accessed and copied. The records remain intact with SingHealth IT services and there is no disruption in services.
The nation’s chief cyber security executive said that the attack was very well-planned and targeted. The PM’s details were ‘specifically and repeatedly targeted’, the executive added.
Singapore’s Minister for Communications and Information S. Iswaran however, reaffirmed that the nation will continue to proceed with its digitisation mission. He called it the way to the future and said that the cyber security agencies will get to the bottom of the leak.
Meanwhile, India is moving ahead with its own healthcare system Ayushman Bharat under which 11 crore Ayushman Cards will be hand delivered to beneficiaries. Digitisation of medical records falling under the scheme may also be targeted following the cyber attack on SingHealth.
