The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) had detected a honeycomb formation in a beam near Trinity Metro station along the Purple Line last week. Since the beginning of repair works on Tuesday last week, BMRCL officials are working overnight to fix it as early as possible, reports TOI.

A minor misalignment of girder was discovered due to a honeycomb defect, which is hollow spaces in precast concrete in the beam above pier 155 near Trinity station.

A senior BMRCL official said, minor works are done after a halt of metro service at 11 pm, and the major work is scheduled for 22, and 23 December and services will be suspended from MG Road, and Indiranagar stations will be stopped in those days.

Negligence during construction has resulted in the honeycomb formation, admitted BMRCL officials. In 2012 too a structural flaw in the distressed viaduct beam and was repaired later.

“We have to see whether the honeycomb formation is due to insufficient compacting or vibrating, inappropriate water to cement ratio while mixing of concrete material or if the formwork was not done properly. These could lead to problems like reducing the load-bearing capacity of the structure, water and air entering the concrete, reduced durability of concrete, rusting and corrosion of reinforcement and less structural strength,” said another official.

Structures between Byappanahalli and MG Road are tested using ultrasonic technology.

Navayuga Engineering Company Ltd. constructed the metro between Byappanahalli a commenced operation in 2011. The defect liability period is only for two years, but after the assessment, the builder could be blacklisted from future contracts.
