Snowfall played spoilsport on Saturday (26 January) as efforts to reopen the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, which has been closed for the sixth consecutive day, were hampered, reports The Hindu.

The closure of the 270-km all-weather highway linking Kashmir and the rest of India has left hundreds of people stranded.

After heavy snowfall in the Jawahar Tunnel area, authorities were forced to close the highway on Monday (21 January). Multiple landslips triggered by incessant rains between Ramban and Banihal over the past week were the reason for the blockage.

An estimated three inches of fresh snowfall had accumulated on the ground at Jawahar Tunnel, said an official.

On the other hand, Nainital received its first snowfall of the season on Friday (25 January), while Chakrata, Mussoorie and other places located at a height of 2,000 metres and above, received fresh spells of snow, said officials.
