Soaring High: Kempegowda Airport Becomes ‘World’s First’ To Bag Awards For Both Arrivals And Departures

Adding to the glory of India's silicon valley, Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport has become world's first airport to secure the Airports Council International’s Airport Service Quality (ACI ASQ) awards for both arrivals and departures. Furthering the good news, it has also won the award for best airport by size or region in the 25-40 MPPA (Million Passengers Per Annum) category in the Asia-Pacific zone.
Hari Marar, managing director & chief executive officer, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) was quoted in the press release saying that the ACI ASQ awards reaffirm their commitment to provide an excellent passenger experience at the Bengaluru airport. BIAL is the key operating agency of the Bengaluru airport, reports Financial Express.
Being the third busiest airport in India, Kempegowda airport recorded around 27 million passengers in the year 2017-18 and expects the same to grow 300 per cent in the next 10 years, according to a report.
In this view, the airport is set to receive a mega infrastructure boost with a Rs 13,000 crore programme planned for it. This will be channeled into building of a new terminal, an additional runway and a multi-modal transportation hub.
The new world class terminal will be built in an environmentally sustainable manner incorporating usage of solar energy with the feature that there will be zero net electricity consumption during the day.
Also, the programme would undertake building of more access roads and internal road infrastructure. The expansion is expected to be completed by the year 2021.
