D K Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress chief, will become deputy chief minister 'in the larger interest of the party', he said Thursday (18 May).

“We have a commitment for Karnataka. Parliament elections are there. So, in larger interest for the party, I have agreed for the formula,” Shivakumar told India Today.

“More responsibility is on me now to serve Karnataka. We have to deliver,” he added.

Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar will take office as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, respectively, in Karnataka, following Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's decision.

The oath ceremony is scheduled for 20 May in Bengaluru.

Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi held several talks on Wednesday (17 May) to determine who gets the top political post in Karnataka.

Shivakumar was also involved in the discussions towards finding a solution.

After the state assembly election on 10 May, Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar fought for the chief ministerial post following Congress's triumph.

The Congress emerged victorious in the election with a clear majority of 135 out of 224 seats, displacing the BJP from power.

The BJP secured only 66 seats, while the JD(S) fell short with 19 seats, despite aspirations to play a pivotal role.
