BCCI president Anurag Thakur.
Going after the BCCI once again, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that it is “inclined to initiate prosecution against the president” of BCCI, Anurag Thakur, for contempt of court and stated that BCCI is purposely delaying administrative reforms suggested by the Lodha Panel.
Thakur had allegedly asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) to give him a letter saying that the implementation of Lodha Panel’s recommendation will amount to government intervention in the functioning of the board, which will ultimately lead to its derecognition. ICC, as media reports claim, refused to issue such a letter.
The apex court on 18 July ordered a revamp of the BCCI over the next four to six months, which was to be overseen by the Lodha Committee. The BCCI has objected to the revamp and had asked the apex court for a review which was rejected on 11 November.
State interference in independent sports bodies has remained a sensitive issue in India. Hockey India and Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) are glaring examples of what happens when the bureaucracy meddles with the affairs of sports bodies.
