Taiwan foreign minister Joseph Wu announced that his country has bought 150 oxygen concentrators and aims to send them to India this weekend to help it deal with a massive increase in Covid-19 infections.

Wu told reporters that they had been working on an aid package for India as per a report in Reuters.

"We are in the process of buying more oxygen concentrators and buying raw materials from overseas so our companies at home can produce even more," Wu told the reporters on Thursday (29 April).

An oxygen concentrator helps reduce Nitrogen from an air supply to produce an Oxygen-enriched air supply for the patient.

Taiwan sees India as a crucial like-minded democracy and friend, and there are close cultural and economic links with India.

Last year Taiwan accused China of imposing censorship in India after its embassy in New Delhi advised journalists to observe the "one-China" principle after newspapers published advertisements for Taiwan's national day, 10 October.

Many countries around the world have been rushing to help India fight the battle against Covid-19.

Earlier on Tuesday (27 April), Taiwan President Tsai-Ing Wen took to Twitter to express Taiwan's solidarity for India in difficult times.

She tweeted "On behalf of all Taiwanese people, I would like to express my serious concern over the rapid spread of COVID-19 in India. Taiwan stands with India in this difficult time, & we are ready to provide help."
