Tada Periyasamy
A group of unidentified goons pelted stones at the house of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Scheduled Caste Wing President Tada Periyasamy and damaged his car that was parked outside.
Periyasamy hails from Tirumanturai village in Perambalur district.
It is alleged that the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) of Thol Thirumavalavan was behind the attack. Periyasamy was earlier with the VCK and switched to the BJP a few years back.
He had started a movement in 2011 to retrieve 'Panchami' lands, i.e., lands granted to the Scheduled Castes during British rule for their livelihood.
The Panchami lands were not supposed to be transferred to people of other castes.
An RTI query by him had revealed that about one-third of the Panchami lands in Perambalur district were under illegal occupation.
Recently, Periyasamy was part of one of the teams sent by the BJP to Vengaivayal village where human faeces were found mixed in a water tank used by the Scheduled Caste community.
According to political commentators, the attack is similar to the one at BJP state vice president Sasikala Pushpa's house in Tuticorin that was allegedly done by members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in December 2022.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
