The Tata Group has started making the Apple iPhone in India, as per a report.

The Tata Group has recently started making the Apple iPhone in India, according to sources who spoke to The Times of India, as the enterprise seeks to acquire the Narasapura factory outside Bengaluru from Taiwanese giant Wistron.

The move comes shortly after Apple Inc chief executive Tim Cook had a meeting with Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran during his visit to India in April.

The two executives reportedly discussed the Tata Group's ambitious electronics manufacturing plans and Apple's expectations from the partnership in both the short- and long-term.

While it remains uncertain whether Wistron will exit completely from its Bengaluru operations, sources have confirmed it has decided to fully leave the Apple operations to concentrate on other businesses, but will continue to look for other opportunities in India for non-Apple products.

The Tata executives are already operating from the Wistron factory in Bengaluru, according to a top source, who added: This ambitious project is being carefully run under the watchful eyes of the group chairman Chandrasekaran and senior Wistron and Apple manufacturing executives.

Sources revealed that the Centre played a vital role in "encouraging and pushing" Apple to grow its manufacturing ecosystem in India and partner with credible Indian corporates for key functions such as manufacturing.
