Tata Consultancy Services office
According to the US Department of Labour data, that Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is the only Indian company that broke into the list of 10 companies that get foreign labour certification for the H-1B visas, Mint has reported. It received 20,755 permits.
The H1B visa programme allows multinational companies working out the US to hire foreign workers on a temporary non-immigrant basis. These visas are usually restricted to those working in speciality occupations of distinguished merit and ability.
The list was topped by Ernst & Young, a global services company based out of London. E&Y was issued 151,164 H-1Bs, which accounted for around 12.4 per cent of the total approved applications. The company was followed by Deloitte and New Jersey-based Cognizant Technologies. Cognizant has a significant Indian presence and is headed by the Indian-American, Francisco D'Souza.
Incidentally, nearly three out of every four H-1B visa holders are Indian citizens, as of 5 October. That takes the count to 309,986 Indians are working in the US.
Recently Donald Trump-led administration proposed new changes to the H1B application process that could hurt Indian firms. The change would benefit those who hold a masters’ degrees from US universities.
