Tirupati’s Renigunta International Airport. (The Hindu)
With Airports Authority of India (AAI) on 2 July inaugurating a 1 MWp solar power plant at Tirupati's Renigunta International Airport, the airport of the temple town joined a select club of solar powered Indian airports including Cochin, Vijayawada and Trivandrum, reports The Hindu BusinessLine.
The development comes under the AAI's goal to ensure that all its airports across South India operate completely on solar energy within three years. The body is set to commission 8 MWp plants at Hubli and Kadapa airports shortly.
The solar plant has been installed at a ground area totaling four acres along the runway of the airport at its isolation bay area to benefit from Tirupati's bright and sunny weather, which remains same across the year.
The usability of solar power is expected to meet over 75 per cent of its electricity needs from the newly built plant during the day, while during the night timings the airport remains non-operational presently.
It should be noted that the AAI has provisioned an expansion of the airport, also aiming to soon make it operational 24x7. As and when that happens, the authorities will also scale up the power generated from the solar plant.
