British counter-terrorism police are investigating a suspected terror attack in Manchester which occurred during celebrations for New Year’s Eve wherein an attacker, armed with a knife stabbed and injured three people, including a British Transport police officer, reports The Guardian. The attacker had allegedly shouted the word ‘Allah’ while carrying out the attack.
Manchester police have described the attack which took place just before 9 pm as just one of several ‘serious crime incidents’ which took place overnight, with 15 people being arrested for their involvement. A suspect in the Islamist stabbing incident has also been taken into custody on charges of attempted murder.
Forensic officers from the police are inspecting Manchester’s Victoria station and a cordon has been laid around the area as part of the investigation.
The police officer injured in the incident, described to be a sergeant in his 30s, has been released from the hospital after receiving treatment.
The assistant chief constable of Greater Manchester police Rob Potts gave an assurance that there was no persisting threat, stating, “[The] events will have understandably worried people but I need to stress that the incident is not ongoing. A man is in custody and there is currently no intelligence to suggest that there is any wider threat at this time.”
BBC producer Sam Clack was an eyewitness to the attack mentioned how the attacker yelled ‘Allah’ right before and during the attack as well. Police had to use pepper spray and a laser gun to bring him down.
