Thailand has decided to extend the fee waiver of 2,000 Baht for tourists from 20 nations, including India, for visa-on-arrival from 21 November 2018 to 30 April 2019, Business Standard reports.
Earlier, the Thai Cabinet had approved the waiver of visa-on-arrival fee for tourists from 20 countries including India and had also ensured that they got an E-Visa on Arrival (E-VOA), cutting processing time to as much as a minute.
The latest development comes because of Thailand’s growth as a global tourist destination.
Recently, the South East Asian country became a favourite for travelling Indians. In 2018 alone, Indian tourists spent around 70 billion Baht (2.2 Million Dollars), while 58 per cent of the tourists from India stayed for an average of 7.45 days in the country.
In 2018, with more than 1.6 million visitors, Indians were ranked sixth among nationalities visiting Thailand and just behind Japan and ahead of Russia. Ten years ago, with 500,000 visitors, India was ranked 11th.
The country, by 2022, is expecting five million visitors from India. The Thailand Authority of Tourism’s (TAT) plans to attract tourists with its “Amazing Thailand” roadshows in various tier two cities like Ahmedabad, Pune, Amritsar and Bhubaneswar.
TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said, “We are very proud to be recognised thus by senior leaders and executives of India's top travel institutions. It will go a long way in bolstering our strong marketing and promotional efforts across India.”
Various Indian airlines like GoAir are planning to increase the number of flights to Thailand and have already sought more flying rights to strengthen the bilateral airline capacity, which is already at an all-time high with 307 weekly flights.
