Thane: Circular Light Metro Transit Project Connecting 22 Stations Approved By Municipal Corporation

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has approved the Light Metro Transit (LRT) project during a general body meeting, Free Press Journal reports.
The LRT comprises of 22 stations, out of which two will be constructed underground. The proposal for the same was tabled earlier this year but it was cleared last week by replacing the internal metro project in Thane.
“The LRT project designed in a circular form connects Thane railway stations and other new proposed stations connecting railway line. The tender process will be floated after monsoon this year,” an official from the municipal corporation was quoted in the report.
The internal metro was designed to connect the main metro line with the highways to provide easy access to the citizens. However, the central government declared the initiative to be non-viable after assessing its detailed project report (DPR). Thereafter, the TMC proposed the idea of LRT that has lesser maintenance and installation costs that saves Rs 6 crore in comparison to the internal metro project.
“The 29 kms long LRT project consists of total 22 stations, out which two will be constructed underground. 20 stations will be constructed on 26 kms long stretch, while underground stations will be built on 3 kms long route. The total cost for the LRT project is Rs 7.165 crore,” explained the official. Moreover, DPR is being prepared to connect slightly interior wards like Kalwa, Mumbra and Diva to the LRT service so that the overall reach of the project could be expanded furthermore.
