The War For ‘Bengal’: Mamata Banerjee Writes To PM Modi After Centre Rejects Proposal For Name Change

The West Bengal government on Wednesday (3 July) has been informed by the centre that it has rejected its proposal to change the name of West Bengal to ‘Bangla’, the Times of India reports.
This is the fourth time that the state government has proposed the name change after 1999, 2011 and 2016. The rejection has promoted CM Mamata Banerjee to write a letter to PM Narendra Modi urging him to “accept the wishes of the people” and expedite the renaming process.
Junior home minister Nityanand Rai said, “Change in the name of a state requires constitutional amendment after taking into consideration all relevant factors.” This statement was in response to a question raised by Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Ritabrata Banerjee,
Mamata Banerjee wants the amendment passed in this session and wrote to PM Modi saying: “This rechristening will be in consonance with the history, culture and identity of our state and will reflect the aspirations of our people.”
