The Chhattisgarh police has recruited 30 surrendered women Maoists into a commando unit in Dantewada of Bastar region, reports Hindustan Times. These women commandos have been deployed in Malangir.

Apart from fighting the Maoists, deployment of these women commandos will also lure more Maoist women to join mainstream forces, the police said.

This platoon of district reserve guards (DRG) named as Danteshwari Ladake (Danteshwari fighters) are out for operation in jungles of Malangir area committee of CPI (Maoist), where a BJP MLA, a Doordarshan journalist and about a dozen policemen were killed in last six months.

The recruits of the DRGs are mainly the local tribals, surrendered Maoists and former members of special police officers. The DRGs are well known for their deadly strikes in the Maoist hardcore areas like Abhujmad and south Sukma.

According to the report, the police said that these commandos are effective as women Maoists outnumber men in Bastar especially in Malangir area committee of Darbha division. The police also believe that these women commandos will come handy in arrests of women Maoists and also reduce the risk of complaints of false human right allegations related to women.
