In a bid to majorly overhaul rail connectivity in the state, the Kerala Cabinet has given the green light to a proposal to construct a semi-high speed rail corridor running from Kasargod in the northern part of the state to the capital of Thiruvanathapuram, reports The Hindu BusinessLine.
The line will run on 532-kilometre route and the state government aims to have it operational by 2024. The massive undertaking will require funding to the tune of Rs 66,079 crore. A joint venture between the Ministry of Railways and the Kerala government will be responsible for the project.
Currently, it takes around 12 to 14 hours to travel from the state capital to Kasargod by train or by road. Once the semi-high speed rail project is completed, this will reduce massively to a mere four hours. The maximum operation speed at which the trains will run will be 200 km/hour.
Also, the line will have a total of 10 stops covering 10 of the state’s 14 districts, making it useful for those journeying to towns between the two end-stations. The Thiruvananthapuram and Kasargod airports will also be connected, adding further mobility for travelers looking to catch a flight.
