Government’s new toll policy may bring relief to the frequent commuters between toll plazas as it allows them to pay only for the section of the corridor they travel and not for the entire length between two existing tolls, Economic Times has reported.

Work on the new toll policy has been started by the government and is expected to be completed in three months. The new toll policy will focus on the construction of toll plazas outside cities and setting a time frame on ending of the toll on highways which are less than four lanes.

As per the report, the policy will focus on encouraging the collection of user fee through electronic mode for which necessary facilities would be set up. Besides, to facilitate the commuters who pay using the smart tag, a permanent discount would be offered.

“While it’s easy to implement in the case of new greenfield roads, it would be tough in the case of existing roads which have unlimited entry and exit points and these are not regulated,” a highway ministry official told the Economic Times.

This system has been implemented on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and is known as closed-tolling system. The same system will be applied in the case of the Western Peripheral Expressway.
