With an aim to completely curb the menace of unathorised promotional calls and SMSes, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is now looking to employ blockchain technology, reports PTI. TRAI believes that blockchain will ensure that only authorised telemarketing agencies can contact only those who have subscribed to the messages.

The draft of the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018 will be available for feedback from the public till 11 June.

If TRAI goes ahead with the proposal, it will be the first in the world to use blockchain in this field. The new norms will record telemarketing communication and check if the customer has given their consent to telemarketing agencies.

TRAI also wants to ensure that subscribers who have given their consent are not recipients of repeated unsolicited calls.

Subscribers will be given the option to completely revoke consent given using either TRAI’s app or other mechanisms that will be put in place.
