The Indian women's hockey team made history on Monday as it stormed into the semifinals of the Olympic Games hockey tournament for the first time.
The Indian team shocked world No. 2 Australia 1-0 in the quarterfinals for their maiden entry into the medal rounds of the Olympic Games hockey tournament.
India held onto their lead through Gurjit Kaur in the second quarter as they showcased immense defensive might to keep the Australian women at bay.
"Very, very happy. It was hard work every day, especially over last two days. It's a happy team. It's the first time we are in the semis. India is proud. Everybody is supporting. That's always special. Years of hard work has paid off today. We scored just one goal and we managed to defend it. I want to thank the entire country for the support," said the goalscorer Kaur.
This is India's biggest win in women's hockey as the team is playing in the Olympics only for the third time and had struggled to the knockout rounds, finishing fourth in Pool A.
