Asserting that the government is determined to privatise Air India (AI), the Union Minister for Civil Aviation Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday (29 August) said that the Centre would embark on “total” privatisation of the national carrier, reports The Hindu.
Adressing a press conference in New Delhi, Puri said, “The government’s determination to privatise AI is a given. It’s undiluted. It should be a total privatisation. We have to get the best possible deal in the shortest time possible,”
He added that a group of ministers (GoM) headed by Union Home Minister could meet “in the next few days” to consider the proposal prepared by the Civil Aviation ministry and reviewed by the committee of secretaries at a recent meeting.
The government, in its earlier disinvestment attempt, had sought to sell 76 per cent of its share in Air India, which reportedly was among the reasons why private players did not show any interest in the privatisation process.
Puri said that the government, learning from its past mistakes, had realised the need for a complete exit from Air India. He also informed that there were players who were interested in the national carrier.
