Twenty Seven states and union territories have agreed to join the centre’s health scheme, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), The HinduBusinessLine has reported. Over 15,000 hospitals have expressed the desire to be part of the scheme claimed VK Paul, a member of National Institute of Transforming India (NITI) Aayog.

“The Prime Minister will launch the scheme on September 23 but effectively it will become operational from September 25 on the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay,” VK Paul told The HinduBusinessLine. The expenses for the current fiscal for the scheme is expected to Rs 3500 crores.

Previously named as Ayushman Bharat, the Jan Arogya Abhiyan caters to the hope and need of the 500 million Indians for whom healthcare remains a challenge even today. Jan Arogya Abhiyan is different from other health programmes that are currently running in the country because of the scale of the project.
