Newly appointed Tripura Chief Minister (CM) has been ‘summoned’ to New Delhi by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi after several of his remarks created embarrassing headlines for the the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) in recent days.

According to a report by the Economic Times, Deb’s remarks have stoked a strong internal reaction from within the party along with the flood of criticism on social media.

Deb’s comments have flown in the face of a recent directive by the PM to BJP leaders to avoid making statements that can supply ‘masala’ to the media.

“People want the government to focus on development and not create unnecessary controversies. There is huge resentment following the chief minister's comments," the BJP leader added.

While Deb’s comments have made him a media favourite, they represent an unnecessary burden for the BJP which would like to go into the national elections next year on a strong footing. The North-East has 25 Lok Sabha seats and the party hopes to win 21 of those.
