Railway Passengers in Uttar Pradesh (UP) will now be able to avail help by just dialling 100 from their mobile phones, as reported by All India Radio. This one-stop solution will allow citizens to contact police, fire brigade and Government Railway Police through a single number.

This service, launched by Director General of Police (DGP), OP Singh in Lucknow on Thursday (16 November), can be used during any casualty. He said that it is the first time GRP services have been integrated with the UP police.

In order to provide improved ease-of-access and quick provision of services, passengers can access emergency services also through social media platforms, mobile App, website and SMS. Also, under the unified platform, the location of the passengers can be quickly ascertained that will help reduce delays in sending help.

It was reported in March 2018 that the government was planning to make the number ‘112’ as the commoner emergency number across the country. Through this, not only police but also ambulance and fire services could be reached. This would be modelled on the ‘911’ which is widely used in the United States.

However, at present, an individual living in the country has to dial 100, 101, 102 and 108 for police, fire brigade, ambulance and disaster management services respectively.
