The Kerala Police has reportedly arrested as many as 1407 Ayyappa devotees in connection with the Sabarimala protests, reports Mathrubhumi.
Most of the devotees are reported to have been arrested from Eranakulam rural (75), Thrippunithura (51). They are being charged for inciting violence and violating the curfew in Pampa, Nilakkal and the Sabarimala sannidhanam.
The police had earlier issued lookout notice for 210 persons allegedly involved in protests against the SC verdict on the hill shrine. Interestingly, a policeman in the AR camp Ibrahim Kutty reportedly featured in the lookout notice, though the police had clarified this as a technical error from the cyber cell.
The police, however, is learnt to have imposed charges on duty obstruction, attempt to murder, inciting violence, attacking women among others on the devotees. Many protestors have alleged that police ruthlessly raided their homes at night and made the arrests.
Activist such as C S Libi and Rehana Fathima who tried to enter the sanctum had earlier been charged for hurting religious sentiments, but no action has reportedly been taken against them as of yet.
