German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Friday that US President Donald Trump's comments about four Democratic Congresswomen "undermine America's strength" and expressed her strong support with the women, CNN reported.
“I distance myself firmly [from Mr Trump’s comments] and feel solidarity with the [four] women who were attacked,” Merkel said at her annual summer press conference.
Earlier in the week, a spokesman for UK Prime Minister Theresa May also criticized the comments, describing them as "completely unacceptable."
Last weekend, Trump told the four women of color - Alexandria Ocasio -Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan- should "go back" to the "crime-infested places" they came from. Three of the four were born in America and the fourth is a naturalized citizen.
Though Trump did not overtly name them in his Tweet, it was evident that the object of his ire was four far left Democrat Congresswomen known as “The Squad”.
With huge social media following and picking up divisive political themes, “The Squad” has emerged as a powerful voice of dissent clashing even with the Democratic party establishment including a recent showdown with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Trump not only refused to apologise but stepped up his attack on “The Squad” describing them as “leftwing extremists who reject everything our nation stands for”.
During a huge Trump rally in North Carolina, the crowd at erupted with chants of “send her back” directed at Ilhan Omar. Trump launched a lengthy diatribe against each of the four congresswomen by name and warned that their rise was indicative of a dangerous turn in politics.
Trump accused the 37-year-old Ilhan Omar of sympathizing with terrorists even as the crowd chanted “send her back.”
“Representative Omar blamed the United States for the terrorist attacks on our country, saying terrorism is a reaction to our involvement in other peoples’ affairs,” Trump said to raucous boos from the crowd. “She smeared U.S. service members involved in ‘Black Hawk Down’ — in other words, she slandered the brave Americans who were trying to keep peace in Somalia.” Trump thundered.
Trump attacked Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for referring to border-detention facilities as “concentration camps”.
