Two militants from the National Liberation Front of Tripura - BiswaMohan (NLFT- BM) surrendered themselves before the Border Out Post (BOP) of the Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday (22 May), reports Indian Express.
The militants, Paresh and Dalok, were operating from their hideouts in neighbouring Bangladesh. They laid down their arms before BSF authorities and surrendered along with their families.
“Two NLFT (BM) cadres along with their wives and children from Mandarichera insurgent camp of Bangladesh expressed their desire to surrender at BSF Border Out Post (BOP) at Dhalai District,” Public Relations Officer of BSF Tripura Frontier Headquarters said in a statement.
The Tribal armed insurgency, which was at its peak between 1980 and late 2000 has come down drastically in recent years due to counterinsurgency efforts from both the state and central machinery. The government also runs rehabilitation programs for insurgents who lay their weapons along with cash incentives and vocational training and orientation.
NLFT was outlawed in 1997, first under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) and later Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and the .
